Re: Cleaning nuts and bolts on mass

I soak in Purple power degreaser, rinse and then polish them in a vibratory tumbler typically used for brass cartrages. The media I use is red corn cob. works great for me

Re: Highest mileage Haflinger?

I bought mine from the 1st civilian owner who had if for 15 years and drove it regularly, both on his farm and to run errands around town. Considering it is a bantam he must have put all but a few hundred KM's on it.

Re: Highest mileage Haflinger?

My bantam has been flipped once (in KM) and is now at 17,xxx. She has had the pistons, cylinders replaced twice, and the heads rebuilt twice prior to my ownership. Just recently the entire motor was rebuilt with another set of pistons and cylinders (this time 1500cc VW parts). The heads this time we...

Re: Haflinger type BN2 Heater info/pics

I dont see why not, just might want to build a heat shield for the pipe so your passanger doesnt melt their boots. I run a BN4 under my work bench in my garage and unfortunatly have scorched my toes a time or two
Amazing amont of heat for such small units.

Nice job Jim. I have a love hate relationship with these darn heaters.
Being an air cooled vdub guy for 30 years now that lives in the Pacific Northwest I have had to do lots of work on these guys.

wrong side of the pond I just scrapped 3 of them with 50% tred left, though I have two full sets of NOS maloyas  Ohh that's a shame. I would have shipped them over for my trailer! Yeah I have thought about using maloyas but they don't look correct on the Oz haffi. I think I still have 2 le...

I posted the price of them in my response. $25 a piece here in the states is about as cheap as it gets.
Down under, just go to your parts store and ask for the equivalant.

Re: Weight of a Haflinger

I can pick up a haffy engine and place it in the bench. I can not do the same for a VW engine. So I would estimate about 200 lbs complete

The hinges could be easily fabricated. The chances of finding an original set would be tough to say the least.

The base of a 87mm vw barrel is larger than a huffy barrel and has to be opened up to fit.
Just like the heads.

Re: Engine Died

For VW barrels to fit you have to open up the case with a fly cutter.
If you get early 40Hp VW parts, the Steyr connecting rods will fit them with out haveing to open up and replace the the piston connecting pins.

Re: 5 speed gearboxes

I have two Judson Superchargers that were used on VW bugs in the 50's and 60's. Short of the engine cover deck clearance it would take little to fit one of them on the haffy motor. I had one of them on my Oval rag top when it was running a 36 hp motor and the difference was definatly noticabl0e. It ...

How early? My early 61 has both. What does the tube from the oil bath to the CARB look like?
On that note I am looking a intake pipe that connects to the oil filter. Anyone have an extra?
