Re: Body off restoration starts today!
Julian, re the reverse gear, I think that with your early gear stick, connecting rods etc. the whole assembly is not designed to have proper adjustment positions (i.e. the rotatable flange between gearbox mechanism and the long connecting rod on younger Hafs). A friend in Germany, I think, used the ...

Angel, John,
I'd also be interested in the parts, so if you don't come to an agreement please let me know.
Kind regards,
Constantin

Re: "Steyr Puch" insignia refurb.
Hello there, sorry for the late reply, but I have been quite busy this week. Here are some pictures... No. 1 shows the early versions of the "Haflinger" and the "Steyr-Puch" badges, however here seen on a Series II Polycab model. Polycabs always had the square Haflinger badge, bu...
Re: Top Speed
Hello, Australia used mph up to a certain year of make when the system was changed to kph. That means both units can be found there, as described by sam. And yes, there exist different versions with different high speeds. It depends on the engine version (4500 or 4800 rpm max), the gearbox ratio(s) ...

Re: Green plastic sleeve on 4WD lever
Hello Julian, I would definitely try to fit the grommet on the handle first and then put the whole assembly into the hole in the body tinwork. I thought you had tried it that way anyway. Then use a rather large screwdriver to put pressure on the lower lip and push it through the remaining space. Of ...

Re: Green plastic sleeve on 4WD lever
Do I understand correctly that the rubber grommet may not be fitted from the other end of the lever because of that spherical part at the end? I find it hard to believe that the grommet may not be fitted over the green handle. Even when you warm up the grommet it does not become flexible enough? And...

Re: Polycab Front Turn Signals
Hello, I don't think that the polycab indicator lights were Lucas (maybe except for some exotic Polycab export versions). The lights originally came from the Puch 500 passenger car, hence they still had the part number starting with 501 in the 1970 spares catalogue (group 9 89). Similar to the passe...

Re: What nut size is this?
Hi again, it seems that Hütterer (successor of CAMO Haflinger parts) has at least the starter button in stock, see: http://www.haflinger-ersatzteile.at/downloads/Original_Steyr_Puch_Haflinger_Ersatzteilkatalog_v2013.pdf (page 127/128, pos. 20) According to the part number, it is the ZKW version (and...

Re: What nut size is this?
Hi Julian,
sadly, I cannot really help with that problem. Are the button and the switch made by ZKW or Bosch?
Have you tried Dale? Maybe he has some used parts from similar age Haflingers.
Kind regards,
Constantin

Re: Combined brake / rear light / indicator cluster
Hi Julian, looking at an early Austrian Army wiring diagram, I am confident that brakes and indicators use the same bulb. http://www.haflinger-4wd.com/offtopic/schaltplan-oebh-5a-01.jpg http://www.haflinger-4wd.com/offtopic/schaltplan-oebh-5a-04.jpg Except for some small differences (army black out ...

Re: Rubber strip between windscreen frame & bulkhead
Hi Julian,
that sounds good! The strips are actually not riveted on, they should be held in place by sheet metal screws. Have a look at the 1970 spares catalogue at 22 05 no. 7. Maybe you can order these screws as well.
Kind regards,
Constantin

Re: Rubber strip between windscreen frame & bulkhead
Hi Julian, the rubber strip definitely goes onto the windscreen frame. It is usually bolted to the frame with small tin plates and small screws. Was it not like that when you took it apart? Not sure if there should be used any glue. Looking at some pictures, I think that the bulge should be on the o...

Have you tried chrome polish? I think that should help if there aren't any large stains due to corrosion.

Julian,
the finish looks superb in the pictures, congratulations! I am sure it will be fun to re-assemble all the bits and pieces to the platform and it will soon look like a Haflinger again!

Re: Low compression
Hello John, it will be definitely easier to pull out the engine first and then start with the dismantling. Pulling the engine out doesn't take long anyway. My feeling is that oversize pistons and rings should be available somewhere. I guess the barrels should be reuseable if you remachine them to ov...

I am also sure that for Julian's Haflinger, the position next to the door is correct. Regarding John's Haflinger, I am sure that the correct position is in front of the driver's seat - You will certainly find four holes there. I have a document about this topic online at: http://www.haflinger-4wd.co...

A great result for the chassis, congratulations!
Just for curiosity: Are you going to keep the 180 mm clutch (because I see the distance ring on the gearbox in the upper picture) or are you going to fit the original 160 mm clutch?
Kind regards,
C.

Re: Is it possible to join body to chassis with engine fitte
I am not sure about that, but I heard that with early Haflingers, the body doesn't allow the assembly with engine fitted to the chassis. The reason is, I think, a sheet metal in the engine compartment (above the engine/gearbox flange). However I am really not sure about this topic and I might be wro...
