Re: slippery things

Wadda you complaining about - its only the skin  . You imports from elsewhere get worried over nuffin  Do you know what brand it is - though hard to tell, the skin looks brown olive and not a python - taipan comes to mind. I had a few run ins with them when I lived in Cairns - here in Can...

Re: Using VW 40hp pistons and cylinders

Given all the work to do to put in the VW gear, is it really worth the effort to only go to the 83mm bore size rather a bit bigger which takes the same amount of work.

Re: Electronic ignition options?

Yes the distributor does need to come out - set dissy up on TDC - mark positions up before removing and then reinsert with marks and rotor on TDC - should then start and refine timing with a timing light. Easy peasy.

Re: Electronic ignition options?

As I indicated I have it fitted and just followed the instructions - straight forward but do a resistance check of the coil - must be above 3 ohms on the primary coil or you will burn the unit out. I had removed the Pertronix for some diagnostics and did run the car for a couple of years without it ...

Re: Electronic ignition options?

I have the Petronix fitted to my Haflinger from Expedition Imports - works fine and is easy to fit. I carry the original points etc in my spares. The only issue with Petronix is that it is sensitive to the resistance of the coil - I originally had a wasted spark coil and it would have blown my pertr...

Hi Dave and thanks for that information. Some of my rubber seat straps are starting to perish on one on the passenger seat has failed so this is a good alternative.

Re: Shuush The Little Haffies Are Sleeping

John - great to see :D As I have mentioned before we dont have any central club and distances make things difficult to organise - we tried a few years back but no interest so was cancelled - there was one in other State where a few local Hafs got together. In now 11 years of ownership I have never s...

Re: Exhaust sealant

This is what I use on all my joints - works really well as it expands when it sets and seals everything up. I guess you cannot get it where you are.

Julian - if you are worried about it get a fuel filter that is not transparent then you cannot see what is going on inside 8-)

Re: Zenith Carb springs

At the moment I do not have any return springs on the throttle cable side of the carb - I just rely on one on the other side. Carb Acceralerator Pump Link.jpg This works well but I might put another spring on the cable side in a similar position to help with the return function when lifting off the ...

Re: Fuel Filters

It is all in the orientation of the filter. The glass bowl which has the in and out side at the same height it should be full as fuel comes in, goes to the bottom and then back out the top. The inline depends on its orientation - if you had it mounted vertically with in at the bottom then the filter...

Re: Polly Rebuild

Two other things to ask if I may 1) Is there any special process in taking the gearbox off the torque tube? The nuts have all been removed but I don't see any movement and as usual the manual appears to be silent on this procedure (although there is some info on remounting it) I had the same issue ...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

Julian - the piping below where you have highlighted is not actually exhaust - while connected to the exhaust pipe is is just the riser for the carb heat and as such does not get really hot. Your layout is basically the same as mine and that area does not get hot at all - I also have an inline filte...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

As John has highlighted the fuel line should be basically be metal from the tank to engine bay - I guess yours has rusted out at some stage. I would seriously consider getting a metal line made up - would be safer. Also, except with hi pressure systems or where the a rubber hose could be damaged, I ...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

I think it is the quality of the rubber in the hose - I have rubber fuel hose that is 50 years old and is still fine yet some hose I bought a few years ago perished deteriorated within a very short time.

Glad you caught it though :)

Re: Using VW 40hp pistons and cylinders

Hi Jim - when I bought my Haflinger 10 years ago it had the 86mm mod done to it - the engine certainly ran well. I am not sure whether my 86mm experience will relate to you 83mm. However the engine failed a couple of years into my ownership with the skirts on number one cylinder breaking off and the...

I cannot answer the question as I have a battery that is about twice the size needed - it is a large lead acid battery (the charging system is not suitable for a modern lithium). The battery I have was in the car when I bought it 10 years ago - is still working but getting down these days and needs ...

Re: Polly Rebuild

Hi Stan - looking at that pic of the front diff you seem to be trying to take the entire side of the diff off with the swing arm. It is best to take the swing arm off first. I assume you have removed the hub etc off the outboard end of the swing arm. On the inboard end you need to remove the swing a...
