Re: 1966 Australian Army Haflinger

Hi Bernard, That is a really lovely trailer; do you know the owner well enough to ask him if he might take some measurements so that I might look to make a replica? Also, some photos showing the running gear of the trailer would be very helpful. Is the floor sheet metal or wood? No worries if this i...

Re: 703 for sale in Australia

Something to keep in the back of your mind in relation to a Haflinger - other than the running gear, the platform with two seats up front and a windscreen - Everything else is an optional extra! So the two tool boxes you have on the RHS are extras, the spare wheel is an extra, the cabin would have ...

Re: 703 for sale in Australia

The gearbox / chassis number or Fahrgest Nr. (as stamped vertically on a flange at the rear end of the central tube) was never the same as the engine number (as stamped in to the lower right rear corner of the engine). In addition to these number is a third number - not sure what it is called, but s...

Those machines look fabulous - great condition.

And as for that Pinz ... If only I could have one just like that. Perfection!

Re: Mini-treffen, and perhaps a Maxi-Treffen

Excellent - it is great fun meeting up & comparing notes etc. I still remember the day that I went to my first European Treffen - in Hafling, Italy - and seeing over 100 Haflingers. Prior to that I had owned a Haflinger for perhaps 40 years and only ever seen about 3 in all that time! PS I can't...

Re: Electric Powered Haflinger build

I am 99% sure that I saw it in action at a Treffen in the Alps last year. Seriously impressive effort by the owner.

John - I would hazard a guess that 98% of Haflinger use-days are well shy of 80km

(Lurch excepted, naturally!) :D

Re: Grease - what type for general use?

This is from an undated Operators Handbook - but the Haflinger has a Zenith carb, later fuel tank and faster hubs so presumably a Series II.

Re: Catch Cans

In a 1960 parts manual (green arrow) you can see the short stubby tube of metal in the right hand side "floor" that the rubber vent pipe attaches to, but on a later one (red arrow) that piece is not shown.

No - early ones (like mine) have a vent through a rubber tube that goes directly down & through the tin floor. Not sure when the change happened, but possibly when they changed from Weber to Zenith carbs?

Re: Where will you find Rust

When I did a bare metal (repair &) respray a couple of years ago, by far the worst area for rust was the double skin below the steering column; The rear footwells needed a bit of patching, & I had previously sorted out a leak in the fuel tank, but elsewhere was remarkably sound.

Have a look in the Documentation section for comparable oil filters.

I have not seen the brass tube you have before - but that is not to say it shouldn't be there!

What makes it an ex RN Haflinger? Certainly no "lift hooks" evident on the load bay . (I don't do Facebook, so couldn't study it in detail)

Re: 703 for sale in Australia

Not criticising it at all, but interested to learn more... * wonder why the rear side boards appear to have been put on "inside out"? * why would a 1974 Haflinger still have a Series 1 fuel tank (even in Australia)? * ditto the rear lights, carb, side indicators * going by the serial numbe...

I _think_ the square section roll bars were a feature of the Swiss army Hafs. Never seen them on civilian models.

Re: Two basket case Haf's for sale

Looking at the photos I'd suggest GBP 3.5k and GBP 1.5k was more realistic; the Royal Navy ones are indeed rare, but the uphill task is finding someone who specifically wants one and is thus prepared to pay a premium.

Re: Two basket case Haf's for sale

I think the asking price needs a strong dose of reality, but to be fair to the vendor he is doing little more than putting his finger in the mid. I'd be interested to learn more about the Royal Navy Haf, but won't be bidding on either ...

John makes a good point; I don't think any of my Hats have had the same engine throughout their life.

EDITED TO ADD: I wonder what the figures are for their "Fiat 500" type road cars? I sincerely hope that they are MUCH better!!!

The Haflinger that I have / have had have clocked much less, ~15,000 miles, 13,500 miles and 16,000 miles*. All UK civilian.

* equivalent to 24k, 21k and 26k km

Re: Tacho for a 1956 Citroen

Thanks Garry - as it happens I had one made in the US only a month ago, and have now fitted it. Not cheap - but not dissimilar to your link, and works perfectly. http://www.westach.com/products/6%20VOLT%20GAUGES/index.php For my Haflinger I bought a VDO gauge (#333-968) - looks right aesthetically, ...
