Hello,
last weekend I have finally managed to finish (or almost finish) cleaning my gearbox on the outside, so here are some fresh pictures:
Still only 95% happy with the cleaning status, as some spots are really hard to access and require more work with a small rotary tool, e.g. Dremel or similar. Here are some pictures that show the condition before the cleaning job:
The dry mud crust sometimes sat like concrete on the aluminium housing - really hard to remove! I used mainly small wire brushes (toothbrush size) and other small tools to clean it all manually, since I find that rotary tools tend to leave unwanted structures on the surfaces.
My plan is now to find the correct special tools somewhen this summer to perform a proper overhaul on the inwards - or, if I'm not that lucky, have it done by a specialist in Graz. Meanwhile, I'll keep on cleaning and restoring other parts, such as the half axles, hub gears etc... The central tube is also still on my workbench. I'll keep you posted on the progress, hopefully soon!

I would be interested to know how much your "specialist" charges to rebuild a gearbox. It might be worth my while sending mine to be done if it really does require special tools to do properly.

Case jig, common pullers, bearing splitters, and other common tools are all that is needed unless you are changing out a (case side)pinion bearing.

I am in the process of rebuilding my series 2 gearbox. I am experiencing difficulties with sourcing the correct needle bearing for the driving pinion (the one that goes it the differential, referenced on page 2.10 fig 15 bearing 65/40/22). I had found a NKIS needle bearing of that size, but unfortunately the inner ring is thicker and longer than the original one. After cutting the inner ring to original specs as for the height, it seems that the outer ring is not rigid enough, the aluminium casing exerting too much pressure on it when the bearing is cold (stiff bearing).
Does somebody have any information on this STEYR modified bearing and any clues on how to get it right.
