What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Hi all.
On another forum I am on, 928s, there is a great thread about what we do with our cars.
So I am starting it off!
( can't post images from an iPad, so I'll do some later)
Let's see what these little cars get up to every day...

Hi Nigel,
Looks like you had a day of hard work, helped by having a Haflinger to throw stuff on the back of. Most Lurch has had to do is cart a load of dead UPS batteries to the scrap man and with plywood sides attached take cut down brambles to the local civic amenity point (rubbish dump). Don't think I have any photos of Lurch doing the actual jobs but here's one showing the plywood sides attached.

I put the tinware back on my engine today - it is too cold here to much else.
Tomorrow I will put the clutch back on and if I haven't frozen put the engine back in.

Seeing the temp was a tropical 8 degrees I went out into the garage.garrycol wrote: Tomorrow I will put the clutch back on and if I haven't frozen put the engine back in.

The first thing to do was to put the lower firewall back in - it has to fit into all the rubber seals and is a real pain to do. Only took about an hour
Then I took the engine off the engine stand in preparation for installation -suspended by the handwinch from the rafters as I do not have an engine hoist.
Now to install the clutch onto the flywheel - my home made clutch alignment tool that I have had for 30years was too big so I made one using a drill bit with electrical tape - the drill just fits into the spigot bush and the tape takes it up to the size of the hole in the clutch friction plate.
See next post for the rest.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Part 2
I then lifted up engine to lower it into the engine bay - stupid boy.
Then I remembered the engine need to come up from the bottom because there is not the room with a dressed engine - doh
On the floor ready to go UP
The engine held up by the winch from above and pushed up from the bottom went in relatively easily and I had the clutch aligned pretty well.
So engine is in and bolted up and during the week I will connect everything up and hopefully will be ready to start next weekend.
So this is what I did today.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
So now I will ask the question. You installed the lower rear firewall first and spent a long time getting the seals in the correct places, now you have the problem of joining the engine air deflecting tin work to the rear firewall: the 8 nuts and bolts that go round the square holes. Is there enough room to get at all of them?
I thought it was one of those tasks you had to do in a specific sequence in order to be able to make it work.
I will need to fit most of the rubber seals back on Lurch at some point as they appear to be missing in places, presumably because they are a real pain to do! I thought about using the old trick of a piece of rope like when you fit a windscreen. Have the rope on one side and then pull it up and then maneuver the rubber seal into place as you work your way around the engine bay.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Those blanking plates all bolts together from underneath - not an issue. They came out first so go in last - the small blanking plate bolts, bolt through from the rear, through the lower firewall and into the captive nuts in the tinware. There is really no way the lower firewall can go in after the engine as the engine mount holes go through it.
The rubbers are a real pain - typical germanic overthinking things - simple rubber strip held in by screws or small bolts with captive nuts would have worked as well and much simpler to install and remove.
Cheers

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
You have blanking plates to go in those holes, I have a trumpet affair as I have heat exchangers which use air blown from the engine to go over pipes heated by the exhaust. So I have two stage heating of cabin air!
Still has the same problem early VW's had, air being blown over the barrels could be contaminated with noxious fumes from a leaking engine and then being blown into the cab. At least it is not direct exhaust gas!

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Unfortunately no heating in my Haffie - I would like it but just rug up. I just have blanking plates on those holes.
I just looked at where you live and while summer temps are much hotter here - winter day time temps are about the same as you but night time is a lot colder. Canberra is both the hottest and coldest capital city in Aust. So I envy you having heating.
So some sort of heating would be nice. Not keen on petrol burning heaters like fitted to some Haffies - we have some small diesel burning camper versions with inbuilt fuel tanks that might fit in the passenger footwell.
As an alternative, for short trips I could fit an electric heater but I would need to ensure the battery charge was up before setting off and the trip would have to be short.
Cheers

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Hello Gary,
I would have recommended to make the engine complete before you put it in... i.e. fit all the tinwork, intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetor etc. I think it makes life much easier than to fiddle around with the rest of the parts in and around the engine room at a later stage.
I know that it is a bit tricky to wrap the rubber seals around the engine tinwork once that the engine is bolted onto the gearbox, but it shouldn't be too complicated.
Kind regards,
Constantin

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Thanks Constantin - yes I did think of doing it that way but decided against that as I have changed the items remaining a few times and have it pretty sorted - as well because of the carby heater pipes and the need for them to pass through the lower firewall, the exhaust and the inlet manifold cannot be both be fitted at the same time - one or the other. I have had these off a lot in the past 6 months so will not take long to fit.
I did all the tinwear though. The rubber sorted itself out in the end but took longer than putting the whole engine in.
Cheers

Not quite today, but I was lucky enough this weekend to spend the day driving to the top of a hill near Gairloch in the West coast of Scotland. Good company and great weather too.

Certainly looks like the Haffie is in its element.
What brand and size ATV tyres are you running? On standard Haffie 12" rims??

I don't use them (much) on the road, they're pretty awful - roughness and they really sap power - on the other hand they're fantastic off-road! They've been on about 6 months and seen lots of hard use; I've had no problems with them at all. One advantage of fitting them on the narrow rim is that it brings the edge lugs right out to the side, which is great for climbing out of ruts.
They're 6 ply (radial) which gives them a bit more strength than a conventional 4 ply ATV tyre.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Whilst sorting out spares and parts I chanced upon the old handbrake and the new lever I got a while ago. So a quick rebuild was undertaken. The old one was damaged and the pawl did not hold, all OK now. Just need to touch up the paint and pack it away.
Best Regards

I received 2 rear seat frames yesterday from Robert Prokschi, so I took them to be painted, also took the main canvas bow to the metal shop to be repaired after it was sand blasted . I will post some photos in the restorations section when I get them back.
