hub gearing
hub gearing
I know a description for where to find the hub ratios has been mentioned,but.... . I am having issues finding them, maybe coated with paint or something...
Could someone send me a pic so my eyes can tell my head what to look for?
Thank you! Mark
BTW it hit 114 degrees F today!

Re: hub gearing
Supposedly marked on the hubs but I have never found any marks on mine. Also if you do find them there is always a chance that the gears may have been changed - my hubs were originally 70kph but are now 75kph.
I would physically check the ratio on one of your front wheels where you can see the CV turning (drive ratio) and see how far the wheel turns with one rotation of the CV.
70kph 16/38 hubs (2.375 reduction - 1:0.421)
75kph 14/31 hubs (2.2143 reduction - 1:0.452).
So if with the 70kph gears if you rotate the CV one rotation the wheel should turn .421 of a rotation but is probably easier to rotate the wheel one rotation and count the CV rotation which should be 2.375 times.
Same for the other gears - not sure what the hub ratios are for slower than 70kph gears but someone should know.
So rotate the front wheel for one rotation and count how many times the CV turns and you will have your answer.

Re: hub gearing
Gary,
I hope you have updated your gear speed plate to match your new gear ratios..... Next person who gets your Haf will reckon something is wrong with it as it goes faster than it should!
Same thing happens with wiring, people add something then the next person takes hours trying to work out where a wire goes or which wire to look for because something doesn't work.
John
P.S.
Mark,
What seems to be the trouble that you need to know the hub ratios? Are you looking to replace them if they are the slower ones? If so, just remember that the gearbox ratios are also a bit different between the "4" speed + Krawler and the "5" speed. So you might end up with a completely different top speed, climbing ability from what you expect!

Re: hub gearing
The hubs are marked by a number (14, 16 or 31) stamped on the (~2" / 5cm) circular stub that protrudes through the centre of the wheel rims. Have to say that I have never been able to see it myself, as they tend to be hidden by paint etc.

Re: hub gearing
That is pretty clear - none of my hubs have anything like that - I wonder if that process was only done at a particular time in the production timeline.

That's what I wanted! Thanks
John,
I have 2 trucks and was considering making one really nice truck, possible gearing differences would be part of it.

Re: hub gearing
Garry,
I think in your second picture the stamping can be seen in the upper right side of the center hole, could be a "16". This would also be typical for Australian Haflingers of that age.
To see it better, you may use a small rotating wire brush or similar to clean that face of the hub shaft.
Kind regards,
Constantin

Garry,
you may also have a look with the wheels on, since that face of the hub shaft is always visible.

Constantin
