loving the posts - it helps inspire me to action, but my Haffa is at the beach, so I don't get to play often enough.
I am amazed at how cold Canberra is, just back from Mt Buller skiing - its warmer!
Interesting to see the Cayenne did 6.3lt/100km -44.8mpg UK - 37.3mpg US , last year it did 6.1lt/100km - 46.3UK - 38.6 US vs the Haflinger econony. Chalk that up to technology.

My fuel consumption varies - I can average 6.5l/100km from Canberra to Newcastle (440km) but only 8.5 on the way back (it is uphill).
I normally average between 7.5 to 8.5 on the highway and around 10 around town but it can go up to 12 if I rush. I even get better fuel consumption in the RRS towing the Haflinger in its box trailer than I do in the Haflinger under its own power.
Yes modern technology does make a difference but driving a Cayenne I guess you wouldn't know about that

Ive had a couple of classic RR, including a LSE nicknamed Thunderbird 2. Love them, but was very surprised at how much better the Cayenne was to the old RR L344 - even the ride, with the RRS being too small in the back. I would've gone for a D4 for the space, but the wife thinks its too lego like. Will certainly be looking at the new ones again, beautiful looking cars.

Well Done Doug, you have a tool friendly cattle dog. My 2 cattle dogs (red and blue) refuse to go anywhere near my Haflinger, or my Land Rover and must be the only cattle dogs that suffer with car sickness. Maybe I will sell both and buy a Holden Ute.

I have had my Haffie for two years now and it has always had a growlie front end most likely the diff. It has since developed a knocking in the front end when either diff lock is engaged - most likely CVs. The passenger side kigpins need doing and I also have some Hi-speed hub gears on order so I thought it is time to take Little Truck (my 101 is Big Truck) off the road to fix all these items.
So today work started - up on the jack stands - start up and run in gear and of course you can not hear any of the noises. Any way when turning wheels by hand etc I had the rear diff lock activated and when turning one of the rear wheels forward there was just some clicking and the other wheel turned backward indicating diff action rather than locked diff action - but if I turned the wheel backwards there was no clicking and I had full diff lock action. I assume from all this that the linkages need adjusting and the diff lock is not locking in correctly - so I will put this on the list of things to check.
So to start - off with the wheels, brake drums (I will get them skimmed) and front bash plate off. I stopped when the mossies started to attack in squadrons and that was after the European Wasps paid a visit. You Europeans have a lot to answer for because the little stingers are not native here but are thriving. I lived in the UK for a year and learnt all about the nasty little critters and even got stung
So tomorrow out come the oils and I will start to strip the rear hubs then later in the week I will remove the front end as a complete unit.

I hope they use the finest lubricants and components at your Haffy "Day Spa"
Looks like the fun has just begun. Look for pitted bearing races on the ring gear side of diff(common growl under load noise) and inspect pinion for chipping or pitting.
If double row pinion bearing falls apart during removal, it must be replaced
Pull speedo drive assembly before separating the pinion housing from diff.
The central tube has 2 threaded bores on the mating flange to aid separation
Looks like the fun has just begun. Look for pitted bearing races on the ring gear side of diff(common growl under load noise) and inspect pinion for chipping or pitting.
If double row pinion bearing falls apart during removal, it must be replaced
Pull speedo drive assembly before separating the pinion housing from diff.

After the flip of my Bantam at Mogfest last month, today I got my windshield frame back from the body shop, This weekend Ill get new glass cut and hope my seal material shows up from Haflinger Technik.
Luckly the window frame, glass and soft cab cover were the only items damaged. Wife and I only had a few minor cuts from the glass brakage.

Thanks for your advice - I am tempted to replace all bearings while they are out. In your experience are the bearings the type you can source at the local bearing shop or there some specialist stuff that can only be supplied by Haflinger parts suppliers. Today, no yesterday...
I came home to find both rear tyres flat on Lurch! Now I don't know if that's because they have punctures (did drive through a lot of brambles on the green lane run), or if they were just low on pressure and it finally got to the point where the side walls couldn't hold Lurch up.
I'll pump them up this evening and then cover them in soapy water to see.
Oh yes, if you remember I had a similar "flat tyre" on the green lane run itself. Very strange to have had 3 flat tyres in a couple of weeks!

I pulled the rear drivers hub off today - the oil was very dirty but everything inside looks pristine. The bearings and races that I could see looked as new so I will not be replacing these.
Just gotta wait for the new hub gears. I will pull the passenger side tomorrow and start cleaning and painting the parts ready to go back in.
Westernair - Shawn did you post up any pics of your incident? I don't recall seeing any but at the time I am sure you had more to worry about. I am glad it is all coming together though.

Long story the has a unimog with backhoe digging a tank trap just on the otherside of a steep incline that cant be seen until you crest the hill. On top of that it was done at night without the permission of the owner, Jim Maloy. we had driven over the hump at least 6 times earler in the day so I thought I knew what was on the other side. If it had not been for the heavy duty canopy bar found on Bantams and the safty roll bar setup that Andre built for my truck it would have been way worse. God was looking over us that night.
